How does being in nature improve your health?

Being in nature doesn’t have to mean being overtaken by heat and insects. It can literally mean going outside and feeling the cool breeze on your skin. Or taking a mindful moment to breathe and listen to the gentle sound of rustling leaves and singing birds.

Whether it’s a leisurely stroll walking your dog or an exhilarating hike along a trail, being in natural places can give you a break from your busy daily life, helping you recharge. Doing outdoor activities like hiking, gardening, or taking a leisurely walk can help keep you physically active, which is important for overall health. Being in natural light and fresh air can improve your sleep, mood, and mental clarity.

Studies have shown that being in nature can calm the mind, reducing stress and anxiety. Green spaces and natural elements can uplift mood and overall psychological well-being. Exposure to natural light and fresh air can benefit mental health, leading to better sleep and increased levels of serotonin, which helps regulate mood.

Now that the weather in the DMV is starting to warm up and talk of the cherry blossoms has begun, I’m starting to get spring fever and eagerly planning outdoor activities for my family and me. I always look for ways to keep my kids active while keeping it fun for them. Perhaps it’s time to organize a leisurely picnic near the Tidal Basin, surrounded by the beauty of blooming cherry trees.

Walking along the Potomac River and enjoying the fresh air will certainly help shake off the lingering winter blues. Embracing the spirit of the season, an afternoon visit to the National Arboretum or exploring the vibrant gardens of the United States Botanic Garden could also be uplifting. There’s something truly special about witnessing the capital region come to life with the arrival of spring!
