Generation X refers to Americans born from the mid-1960s to the early-1980s. Some say the exact birth years are from 1961 to 1981, whereas others say the birth years are between 1965 and 1979.

The exact years may vary, but we can all agree that it’s after the baby boom generation and before the millennials. I’m on the cusp so some may call me a “xennials,” but I proudly identify as Gen X. It is a label that represents our spirit, resilience, and determination.
In this article, I share my thoughts on being a Gen-Xer and how our generation has influenced society. Our unique experiences and perspectives, shaped by the fast-paced culture of our time, have made a significant impact. Generation X has left a lasting impression on various fields, contributing to the world’s development. It’s crucial to acknowledge and appreciate the role of Gen-X in shaping the world as we know it.
The Forgotten Generation

We are the silent influencers and unsung heroes of our time. Growing up after the Baby Boomers, who were known for their idealism and cultural movements, Generation X had to find our own path to make a difference in society.
We are sandwiched between the Baby Boomers and Millennials, which sometimes leads to us being overlooked. This perception has made some believe that we are a “forgotten” generation, with our influence and contributions often ignored. However, this lack of recognition doesn’t diminish the significant role we have played in shaping society.
But not being recognized also made us independent and self-reliant. Growing up at a time when both parents were likely working, we learned to take care of ourselves and became the original “latchkey kids.” This independence has carried over into our adult lives, making us strong and able to adapt to challenges.
We have not just learned how to survive, but to thrive in our own way. We make our own paths and love the freedom to create our own rules. This amazing ability has made us forward-thinkers who are great at finding new solutions to any challenge. With strong determination, we can overcome any obstacle and rise above with positivity and elegance.
The Rise of Technology

Unlike the Baby Boomers before us and the Millennials who followed, Generation X was at the forefront of a world that was rapidly accelerating in terms of technology and cultural changes.
As Gen-Xers, we were the first generation to grow up with personal computers, and video games. We witnessed the birth of the internet, and the emergence of social media. And were quick to embrace it. We were the pioneers of the digital frontier, exploring the possibilities of this new technology and shaping its development.
We have a different view of how the digital age has grown because we lived before cell phones and social media. But we have learned to use them and can easily handle both the old and new ways of communication. We like talking in person, but we also like how digital technology makes things easier and keeps us connected. Our generation is defined by this balance between the past and the present.
Work Ethic and Entrepreneurship

Growing up during uncertain economic times, many individuals from the Gen-X generation were taught the importance of working hard and being self-reliant. We were told by our Boomer parents that we could do anything. And we believed them.
In our adult lives, Generation X had to balance work and personal life. As young adults entering the workforce, we saw the shift from traditional careers to a more flexible and entrepreneurial mindset. We had the chance to pioneer new ideas about work-life balance and challenge what previous generations believed. Flexible hours, remote work, and following our passions became more common during our time.
Gen-Xers are known for starting their own businesses. We are a generation of self-starters who take risks and pursue our passions. As a result, we have made a big impact on the economy by starting more businesses than any other generation.
We have been the driving force behind many successful startups and companies, contributing to economic growth and innovation. Our spirit of entrepreneurship and determination have established us as a strong presence in the business world.
The Hip-Hop Movement

Generation X’s greatest contribution to the world was undoubtedly hip-hop music. I spent the first decade of my life growing up in Brooklyn, New York and was fortunate enough to experience it firsthand. I can attest to the profound impact it had on our lives. Hip-hop culture was not just about the music; it was a lifestyle that permeated every aspect of our existence.
We were the “MTV Generation” and witnessed the rise of BET. We were the first ones to love music videos and the pop culture that took over TV in the 80s and 90s. This fast-paced culture shaped our perspective and influenced how we engaged with the world.
During that time, hip-hop fashion became a big part of who we were. We loved the colorful and unique streetwear that went along with the genre. We wore baggy jeans, big jerseys, and cool sneakers. They called us the slacker generation, but we were just misunderstood.
Our influence on fashion and music was so great that the newest generation, Zen-Z, is straight biting our style. But I’m not complaining; it’s flattering.
The Xennial Phenomenon
As the oldest members of Generation X approach their 40s and 50s, a new term has emerged to describe a unique subgroup – Xennials. Xennials are described as a “micro-generation” born between 1977 and 1983. This group represents a unique blend of Gen-X and Millennial characteristics, embodying the best of both worlds.
Xennials have characteristics of both Generation X and Millennials. Some Xennials feel an identity crisis because they don’t quite fit in with either generation.
However, this also means we have a unique perspective and can bridge the gap between the two. They understand the values and perspectives of both generations, which allows them to mediate and facilitate understanding between them.
The Impact of Generation X
While our impact may not be as widely recognized as that of the Baby Boomers or Millennials, Generation X has played a crucial role in shaping the world we live in today. Our independence, adaptability, and entrepreneurial spirit have led to significant contributions in various fields, including technology, business, and culture. We have been the driving force behind many of the most significant advancements and innovations of our time.
But perhaps our most significant impact is in the way we have raised the next generation. As parents, we have instilled in our children the same values of hard work, independence, and resilience that were instilled in us. And as they grow up and make their mark on the world, they will carry a piece of Generation X with them. We have raised a generation of thinkers, doers, and innovators, and their contributions will continue to shape the world for years to come.
Embracing Our Identity
As a Gen-Xer, I am proud of my generation and the unique perspective we bring to the table. We may not have the same level of recognition as the other generations, but that doesn’t diminish our impact and contributions. We have made our mark on the world in our own unique way, and our influence can be seen in every aspect of society.
Generation X has made significant contributions to society by bridging the gap between analog and digital, adapting to technological advancements, changing the sound of music, and shaping the workforce. Our influence resonates in various aspects of society, laying the groundwork for future generations.
Conclusion

Being a Gen-Xer means being part of a generation that has faced challenges, embraced change, and had a big impact on the world. Gen Xers have a unique perspective, having lived through a lot and experiencing the ups and downs of a changing society. They may not always get recognition, but they have been influential, revolutionary, and heroes in their own way.
So the next time someone asks me about my generation, I will proudly say that I am a Gen-Xer, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. I am proud to be part of a generation that has made such a significant impact on the world, and I look forward to seeing the continued influence of Generation X in the years to come.
