Matcha literally means “powdered tea.” It is a high-grade green tea ground into powdered form. The green tea powder is whisked into hot water instead of steeped to form a frothy drink.

History of Matcha

While the nutritional benefits of Matcha are now being realized in western nations, the actual history of this Matcha goes back many centuries. Buddhist Monks in Japan developed a way of cultivating tea plants by growing them under shade. To this day, Matcha is grown on farms that are entirely shaded to increase the levels of amino acids and give it its distinct flavor. After 20 days without sunlight, the plants go through intensive harvesting steps.

Benefits of Matcha

Matcha contains, on average, about 64 milligrams of caffeine per 8-ounce cup, making it a great alternative to coffee if caffeine is a concern. The antioxidants and nutrients contained within may lower blood pressure, reduce your risk of heart disease, and even boost your metabolism.

Promotes a healthy lifestyle

Full of antioxidants and nutrients Matcha is known for being one of the healthiest superfoods known today. One teaspoon has 10x as much of the antioxidant levels than in regular green tea. These antioxidants have been shown to prevent certain cancer growths and disease-causing bacteria and viruses.

Promotes Calmness

Matcha contains L-theanine, a compound that has been shown to increase alertness, relaxation, and stress relief. This compound allows caffeine to be absorbed slower, reducing the jitteriness associated with drinking caffeine.

Promotes Weight loss

Matcha contains EGCg and fiber, which are great for losing weight and speeding up metabolisms leading to more calorie burn. An added benefit is that it has a hormone responsible for making us feel full, reducing overeating.

3 Creative ways to Enjoy Matcha

Matcha tastes great and is very versatile.

1. Matcha Latte

This is my favorite way to enjoy matcha powder. I put 1 cup of unsweetened oat milk, 1 teaspoon of matcha, and 1 stevia packet inside my milk frother, and I feel like I am at a French Cafe.

2. Matcha Treats

An excellent way to enjoy matcha is to incorporate it into tasty treats. Add it to your favorite recipes such as cake, donut glaze, ice cream, or even fudge.

3. Matcha Smoothie

Adding a teaspoon of matcha powder to your current smoothie is a great way to add an extra boost of nutrition to your healthy fruit and veggie smoothies. Put your favorite frozen berries (e.g., strawberries, blueberries) into a blender with your favorite juice, coconut water, or milk alternative and a teaspoon of matcha. Enjoy!

Matcha Concerns

If you are consuming Matcha daily, you’ll want to make sure you’re choosing organic matcha that is also screened for toxins and heavy metals.

  • Not all matcha is created equal. Tea experts warn that quality is key with matcha. I like Jade Leaf Organic Japanese Matcha Green Tea Powder because it’s USDA certified organic, third-party tested for contaminants, and from Japan.
  • Beware of shelf life. Matcha doesn’t have a particularly long shelf life. Once you open it, use it within 2 months for the best color and flavor. I recommend buying it in small quantities and storing it in the fridge to preserve freshness.
  • Sweeten to taste. Matcha’s grassy, umami flavor can be an acquired taste. If you’re new to making it, don’t hesitate to add a few drops of stevia or honey.

When enjoyed in moderation, matcha’s health benefits far outweigh its risks!
