Matcha Tea

History of Matcha

Matcha’s history began in Japan with Buddhist Monks. They discovered a unique way of growing tea plants by cultivating them in the shade, intensifying the flavor and aroma.

The careful process involves shading the tea gardens, plucking the leaves, steaming, drying, and grinding them into a fine powder. Whisking the powder with hot water creates a frothy, vibrant green beverage.

Matcha is loved worldwide and used in traditional Japanese tea ceremonies, as well as in lattes, smoothies, and desserts.

Benefits of Matcha

Matcha tea is different from regular green tea. It’ has antioxidants called catechins that shield your body from free radicals and lower stress levels. Additionally, Matcha has more of these antioxidants than regular green tea, all thanks to the shading process. So yeah, it’s super good for your health.

Matcha has caffeine, but not as much as coffee. An 8-ounce cup of matcha has about 64 milligrams of caffeine. It’s a good option for people who want a bit of energy without feeling jittery.

Promotes a healthy lifestyle

Full of antioxidants and nutrients Matcha is known for being one of the healthiest superfoods known today. One teaspoon has 10x as much of the antioxidant levels than in regular green tea. These antioxidants have been shown to prevent certain cancer growths and disease-causing bacteria and viruses.

Promotes Calmness

Matcha contains L-theanine, a compound that has been shown to increase alertness, relaxation, and stress relief. This compound allows caffeine to be absorbed slower, reducing the jitteriness associated with drinking caffeine.

Promotes Weight loss

Matcha contains EGCg and fiber, which are great for losing weight and speeding up metabolisms leading to more calorie burn. An added benefit is that it has a hormone responsible for making us feel full, reducing overeating.

3 Creative ways to Enjoy Matcha

Matcha tastes great and is very versatile.

1. Matcha Latte

This is my favorite way to enjoy matcha powder. I put 1 cup of unsweetened oat milk, 1 teaspoon of matcha, and 1 stevia packet inside my milk frother, and I feel like I am at a French Cafe.

2. Matcha Treats

Adding a teaspoon of matcha powder to your current smoothie is a great way to add an extra boost of nutrition to your healthy fruit and veggie smoothies. Put your favorite frozen berries (e.g., strawberries, blueberries) into a blender with your favorite juice, coconut water, or milk alternative and a teaspoon of matcha. Enjoy!

Matcha Concerns

If you are consuming Matcha daily, you’ll want to make sure you’re choosing organic matcha that is also screened for toxins and heavy metals.

  • Not all matcha is created equal. Tea experts warn that quality is key with matcha. I like Jade Leaf Organic Japanese Matcha Green Tea Powder because it’s USDA-certified organic, third-party tested for contaminants, and from Japan.
  • Beware of shelf life. Matcha doesn’t have a particularly long shelf life. Once you open it, use it within 2 months for the best color and flavor. I recommend buying it in small quantities and storing it in the fridge to preserve freshness.
  • Sweeten to taste. Matcha’s grassy, umami flavor can be an acquired taste. If you’re new to making it, don’t hesitate to add a few drops of stevia or honey.
  • Excessive consumption of Matcha may cause caffeine-related symptoms and interfere with certain medications. It’s important to enjoy Matcha in moderation and consult with a healthcare provider if needed.
